Inside the Nervous System: Measuring Emotional Engagement Live

At IMEX America 2026, we showed how wearable technology reads emotional engagement in the room as it happens.

The classic post-event question is “Did they enjoy it?” It’s a fair question with a soft answer. A talk, a song, or a room that changes something in people leaves a trace in the body, and measuring event engagement at that level is now possible live, in the room, as it happens.

At IMEX America in Las Vegas, we hosted Inside the Nervous System: Live Engagement Measurement in Action. The session demonstrated wearable technology, compatible with devices attendees already wear (Apple, Garmin, Whoop, Fitbit, and Oura), that reads heart rhythm data in real time to measure genuine emotional engagement.

The Short Version

  • Emotional engagement is measurable. Human connection registers in the brain and the body, and a consumer wearable can read it.
  • One signal produces two metrics. Heart rhythm data becomes Immersion and Safety, tracked moment by moment.
  • Peak moments can be designed. Delivery, interaction, and environment all move the signal.
  • The data explains itself. Moment-by-moment graphs show which segments lifted engagement and where attention dropped.
  • Measurement belongs at the start. Rehearsals and mock-ups can be measured before the event, so the data guides the creative from the brief.

The Neuroscience Behind Measuring Event Engagement

The research behind this work comes from Dr. Paul J. Zak, neuroscientist and co-founder of Immersion, whose work on the biology of human connection has been cited more than 20,000 times. Two neurochemicals sit at the center:

  • Dopamine drives reward.
  • Oxytocin drives connection.

Released together, they form the brain’s emotional valuation network, which drives attention, memory, and decisions.

Two Decades of Research Behind the Signal

Dr. Zak’s body of work includes more than 200 published papers, 20 years of research, and 15 million people measured. Dr. Zak’s research reports 90 to 99% accuracy in predicting mood, energy, and behavior, and brands including PepsiCo, The Weather Channel, and eBay have applied it.

The Breakthrough: Reading Emotional Engagement From a Wearable

This brain activity leaves a measurable imprint on cranial nerves, and that imprint can be read from the heart. That means a consumer wearable can capture it and turn it into two metrics:

  • Immersion tracks emotional investment, second by second.
  • Safety tracks how psychologically comfortable people feel.

Peaks and troughs in the signal reveal where people were emotionally invested. The signal predicts both in-market behavior and outcomes beyond it.

What Event Engagement Data Shows You

Measuring a room this way produces a full picture:

  • Value score: how much the brain values the experience, second by second.
  • Detail over time: a moment-by-moment graph that reveals the why.
  • Psychological safety: how comfortable people feel, minute by minute.
  • Demographic breakdown: which audience segments loved it and which tuned out.
  • AI-powered insight: the three changes that matter most.
  • Compounding intelligence: every event you measure sharpens the next one.

Event Engagement ROI: A New Kind of Proof

Traditional post-event measurement asks whether attendees enjoyed the event. Physiological data adds a new layer of proof: what they experienced, what they’ll remember, and what they’re likely to do next. It complements traditional measurement and gives stakeholders evidence of engagement depth and emotional investment.

Measure From the Brief, Before the Event

Measurement can start well before opening day. A sales kickoff, user conference, or product launch can be designed with Immersion data from the start by measuring rehearsals and mock-ups, then letting the signal guide the creative from the brief.

Four Ways to Design for Emotional Engagement

Here’s what we asked planners to take home:

  • Design every brand experience for emotional engagement on purpose.
  • Keep segments to 20 minutes or less to protect attention.
  • Use storytelling, music, and participation to lift Immersion and connection.
  • Measure early, starting with the brief.

Questions Worth Asking

How do you measure event engagement in real time?

Wearable technology can read heart rhythm data from devices attendees already own and translate it into engagement metrics like Immersion and Safety. Organizers see second-by-second data during the event itself, with a full report to follow.

How is engagement data different from a post-event survey?

A survey captures what attendees say they experienced after the event. Physiological data captures what they experienced in the moment, so the two together give a fuller picture of event engagement ROI.

When should engagement measurement start?

As early as the creative brief. Measuring rehearsals and mock-ups lets the data guide content, pacing, and staging before the event goes live.

What should you ask a live event production company about measuring engagement?

Ask which metrics they track beyond attendance and satisfaction, and how that data feeds back into design. Ask how they’ll use it to improve your next event.

Live Event Production Designed Around Measurable Engagement

This is the thinking behind every live event production we design, from sales kickoffs to large-scale user conferences. We bring research into the room so emotional engagement becomes something you can see, measure, and build on.
